Court Security
Court Security and Conduct
The Lewis County Sheriff's Office is responsible for providing court security and ensuring the safety of all court personnel. Criminal and civil proceedings are held three to four times each week, which may include:
Jury trials
Divorce hearings
Civil disputes
Criminal dockets
Preliminary hearings
Bench trials
A Sheriff's Office bailiff is present during all court sessions to maintain order and enforce courtroom rules.
Courtroom Entry Procedures
Before entering the courtroom, all individuals are screened for weapons and other prohibited items.
Proper attire is required, and cell phones are not permitted inside the courtroom.
Rules of the Lewis County Court System
As outlined by Judge Matthew J. Wilson of the 2nd Judicial Circuit Court:
All persons are subject to search.
No weapons allowed.
Appropriate attire required.
Remove coats before entering.
No cellular phones allowed (except attorneys).
No cameras, video, or audio devices allowed.
No food or beverages allowed.
Small children are not allowed (except during Juvenile proceedings).
Dress Code
Inappropriate attire will not be permitted during court proceedings. Court Bailiffs will enforce these rules at the direction of Judge Matthew J. Wilson.
The following clothing items are NOT permitted:
Shorts or cut-offs
Tank tops
Sweatpants
Head coverings (unless religious in nature)
Flip-flops
Clothing promoting alcohol, drugs, or obscene behavior
Pajamas or other inappropriate attire
