On July 7, 2026, the Lewis County Sheriff's Office was notified of a traffic complaint on State Highway 61, north of Canton, Lewis County, Missouri. The complainant reported that a camouflage pickup, traveling southbound, had entered the median and traveled into the northbound lanes of traffic. This information was forwarded to Deputy Jason Slater and Deputy Steven Battaglia, who were handling another incident in the area.
Deputies Battaglia and Slater were able to locate the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop based on multiple observed traffic violations and the reported traffic complaints. The driver was identified as Steven Lee Savage of Keokuk, Iowa, and formerly of Lewis County, Missouri. During the investigation, Deputy Slater was granted consent to search the vehicle. The search resulted in the seizure of several items of drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine.
Mr. Savage was placed under arrest and transported to the Lewis County Jail, where he was placed on a 24-hour hold for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Deputy Slater submitted a request for formal charges at that time.
On July 8, 2026, Lewis County Prosecutor Chelsea Fellinger filed formal charges alleging Mr. Savage committed the offenses of a Class D Felony of Possession of a Controlled Substance and a Class D Misdemeanor of Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
On July 8, 2026, the Honorable Corey Moon, Associate Judge of Lewis County, issued a warrant for Mr. Savage for two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Bond was set at $10,000 cash only, and Mr. Savage remains in custody at this time.
The Lewis County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
