On April 29, 2026, Deputies Mathias Frank and Jason Slater responded to Lewistown, Missouri, for a report of a disturbance in progress at a local bank. It was reported that James Sultzman was attempting to cash a fraudulent check and was causing a disturbance with employees before leaving the business on foot.

Deputies arrived in the area and located a subject near the park in Lewistown. Through investigation, it was determined that Mr. Sultzman had attempted to cash a paycheck at the bank, which was denied after it was discovered the check was fraudulently produced. Further investigation revealed that Mr. Sultzman had successfully cashed two additional copies of the same fraudulent check at two other banks in Lewis County earlier in the day.

Mr. Sultzman was placed under arrest for forgery. During a search incident to arrest, an item associated with a controlled substance was located and seized. Mr. Sultzman was transported to the Lewis County Jail, where Deputy Frank submitted a request for formal charges for forgery, stealing, and possession of a controlled substance.

On April 29, 2026, Lewis County Prosecutor Chelsea Fellinger filed formal charges alleging Mr. Sultzman committed three Class D felony counts of forgery, one Class D felony count of stealing $750 or more, and one Class D felony count of possession of a controlled substance.

On April 30, 2026, the Honorable Corey Moon, Associate Judge of Lewis County, issued a warrant for Mr. Sultzman for three counts of forgery, one count of stealing, and one count of possession of a controlled substance. Mr. Sultzman is currently lodged at the Lewis County Jail in Monticello, Missouri, in lieu of a $10,000 cash-only bond.
