On October 21, 2025, Deputy Steve Battaglia stopped a vehicle in LaBelle, Lewis County, Missouri, for having a defective tail light. Upon speaking with the driver, Gage Michael Smith, Deputy Battaglia recognized him as someone wanted for failing to appear in court on a felony charge related to driving without a license. The deputy also suspected Smith was driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Smith was found in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while under the influence of methamphetamine (DWI) and the outstanding warrant from Lewis County. He was then transported to the Lewis County Jail.

On October 22, 2025, Lewis County Prosecutor Chelsea Fellinger formally filed charges against Smith. He was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance (meth), misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor DWI under the influence of methamphetamine.

Judge Corey Moon issued a warrant for Smith's arrest. He remains in custody at the Lewis County Jail on a $20,000 cash-only bond for the new charges and a $5,000 cash-only bond for the previous failure to appear charge.
