Details: 

On April 18, 2026, Deputy Mathias Frank responded to a report of a domestic disturbance near North 7th and State Street in La Belle, Missouri. It was reported to Deputy Frank that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle and the suspect had fled the scene.

Upon arrival, Deputy Frank learned from witnesses on scene that Mr. O'Brien engaged in a verbal altercation in an attempt to settle a civil matter regarding a pull-behind camper. During this altercation, the suspect left with the camper and a witness in the bed of the truck. While leaving the scene in a careless and imprudent manner, a pedestrian was struck after attempting to stop Mr. O'Brien from leaving with the witness and camper. It was reported to Deputy Frank that Mr. O'Brien intentionally swerved at the victim, striking him with the camper.

The victim was transported by ambulance and eventually airlifted. Mr. O'Brien was later located and placed under arrest. Mr. O'Brien was placed on a 24 hour hold at approximately 3:27 p.m. for Assault 1st degree or attempt and armed criminal action.

On April 18, 2026, Lewis County Prosecutor Chelsea Fellinger filed formal charges alleging Mr. O'Brien committed the Class B felony offense of assault 1st degree or attempt and the unclassified felony of armed criminal action.

On April 19, 2026, the Honorable Corey Moon, Associate Judge of Lewis County, issued a no bond warrant for Mr. O'Brien. Mr. O'Brien is currently lodged at the Lewis County Jail in Monticello, Missouri.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
